Loan Counseling

Students borrowing federal student loans are required to complete entrance and exit loan counseling. Learn more about each type of loan counseling and when you should complete the online courses.

Entrance Counseling

Before receiving your first federal student loan, the federal government requires you to participate in entrance counseling.

The purpose of entrance counseling is to educate you about student loans so that you will be a well-informed borrower.

Entrance counseling covers such topics as:

  • Interest rates
  • Repayment options
  • Rights and responsibilities
  • Consequences of default

All first-time federal student loan borrowers need to complete entrance counseling online.

The Office of Student Financial Services will be notified when the test has been completed.

Exit Counseling

Before you leave school or graduate, you are required to complete exit counseling online.

The purpose of exit counseling is to:

  • Select a repayment plan
  • Review deferment, forbearance and cancellation provisions
  • Review loan consolidation
  • Review serious consequences of delinquency and default

You will receive a notice when it is time for you to complete the exit counseling requirement.

If the exit counseling requirement is not met within the designated time frame, typically one semester, you may experience a delay in the disbursement of your financial aid. Also, a hold will be placed on your account and no transcripts will be released.
