Radiation Safety Training

New Employee

The PI/Supervisor will need to complete the Radiation Safety Checklist, Supervisor’s Information and Completion Form and email to chslabsafety@okstate.edu

The application for use will contain a sketch of the laboratory, labeling all fixed countertops and movable equipment. Surfaces to be used for radioisotope work should be clearly marked on these drawings and marked accordingly in the laboratory with the radiation symbol.

Trainee: The following training does not have to be taken in five consecutive days. Discuss the timetable with the PI/Supervisor you will be working with. If you have questions at any time throughout the training period and afterwards bring them to the attention of your PI/Supervisor or the RSO.

General Radioisotope Safety Procedures
Initial training - Day 1
- Radiation Safety Training - Parts 1-8 (MS PowerPoint)
- Female Employees required: Print or download and read Instruction Concerning Prenatal Radiation Exposure (PDF)
- For isotope(s) being used, study information provided by PI/Supervisor
- Observe and receive on-the-job training for laboratory radiological activities from PI/Supervisor or other person that they designate
- Study CHS Laboratory Emergency Response Procedures, sections 1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7 and 1.8
Initial Training - Day 2
- Study OSU-CHS Radiation Safety Manual Become familiar with the Radiation Safety Forms in Appendix B or click Forms
- Standard: Title 252. Department of Environmental Quality; Chapter 410. Radiation Management note: all should know where to find and familiarize yourself with contents
- Standard: NRC Regulations 10 CFR Part 19--Notices, Instructions and Reports to Workers: Inspections and Investigations, note: all should know where to find and familiarize yourself with contents
- Standard: NRC Regulations 10 CFR Part 20--Standards for Protection Against Radiation, note: all should know where to find and familiarize yourself with contents
- NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) Guides (pdf), note: all should know where to find and familiarize yourself with contents, this guide is very useful as it summarizes all the regulatory standards for working with radioactive material in the academic/research laboratories
- Observe and receive on-the-job training for laboratory radiological activities from PI/Supervisor or other person that they designate
Initial Training - Day 3/4
- Watch media presentation Safety in the Research Laboratory-Radionuclide Hazards (12 min.) produced by Howard Hughes Medical Institute
- Observe and receive on-the-job training for laboratory radiological activities from PI/Supervisor or other person that they designate
- Radiation Safety 40 hour Training Quiz based on any of the information studied thus far including power point presentation
Initial Training - Day 5
- Observation by Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) and PI/Supervisor or other person that they designate of dry run of radiological procedure using non-radiological materials, note: make arrangements with RSO at least one week prior
- Observation by Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) and PI/Supervisor or other person that they designate of actual run of radiological procedure, note: make arrangements with RSO at least one week prior.
Annual refresher training
PI/Supervisor may need to complete the Radiation Safety Checklist, Supervisor’s Information and Completion form (note: send to chslabsafety@okstate.edu) It is only necessary to complete the checklist if any of the issues or responsibilities contained on the checklist have changed in the trainees job assignment since the last training.

Trainee: If you have questions at any time throughout the training period and afterwards bring them to the attention of your PI/Supervisor or the RSO.
