Training and Education
Hands-on clinical and surgical experience are the foundation of resident training. Our residents work on a regular basis with several physicians in the Tulsa area. Our core residency trainers are osteopathic and allopathic surgeons who practice full spectrum otolaryngology and are motivated to train residents. Residents receive graduated responsibility in surgical cases and are primary surgeons on cases as their skills advance. Residents regularly participate in ablative and reconstructive Head and Neck oncologic procedures, including free-flap reconstruction, within our community. Local hospitals where residents perform surgical cases include: OSUMC, Hillcrest Hospital System, St. John Health System, and Tulsa Spine and Surgical Hospital. This affords our residents a broad experience in management of a wide variety of acute and chronic ENT pathology. On a weekly basis, the ENT residents operate with a well-published and eager to teach pediatric otolaryngologist with hands-on exposure to pediatric airway procedures such as: supraglottoplasty, tracheal reconstruction, vascular malformations, and craniofacial procedures.
In addition to training available within our community, supplemental “out rotations” are also available. Our residents rotate at the Pediatric ENT of Oklahoma during their PGY4 year. This provides exposure to a broad spectrum of otologic procedures including: stapedectomy, cochlear implants, and acoustic neuromas. In Tulsa, “out” rotation time is also spent with Dr. Cuzalina of Tulsa Surgical Arts. Time is allowed for a senior resident to do elective rotations if they choose.

- PGY1: 6 months of off-service rotations (Neuroradiology, ICU, ER, Anesthesiology, General Surgery), 3 months of Head & Neck/Trauma, 3 months of General ENT
- PGY2: 6 months Head & Neck/Trauma, 3 months General ENT, 2 months Pediatric ENT, 1 month Research
- PGY3: 3 months General ENT, 3 months Head & Neck/Trauma, 2 months Cosmetics/Plastics, 2 months Otology, 2 months Research
- PGY4: 6 months General, 2 months Pediatric ENT, 1 month Research, 3 months Head & Neck/Trauma
- PGY5: 3 months Head & Neck/Trauma, 6 months General ENT, 2 months Otology, 1 month Elective/Research

Call Schedule
- PGY 1: Buddy call every Monday for 6 months, then 1:4 for the remaining 6 months
- PGY 2: 11 days/month
- PGY 3: 9 days/month
- PGY 4: 7 days/month
- PGY 5: 3-4 days/month
Didactics and Conferences
Didactics are every thursday after resident clinic at the Ear, Nose & Throat specialists of Tulsa clinic. Didactics follow COCLIA question format.
Grand rounds at OSUMC every other Tuesday at 7:00 AM
Tumor board is normally the second Thursday of once month from 7am to 8am in Health Plaza Classroom A on the Lower Level at SJMC

Procedural Training
Temporal Bone lab and Simulation Lab are quarterly with an attending present. Once residents complete the Simulation Lab Orientation they are granted badge access to practice on their own.
Other Information
Every Thursday afternoon residents who are not on subspecialty rotations will attend the OSU ENT resident clinic. All cases generated in clinic will be performed at OSUMC on Tuesday mornings.
Medical Student Clerkship
Provides students with a clinical experience in the field of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery. Students are exposed to the techniques of examination of the ear, nose, nasopharynx, mouth, larynx, and neck. They will have clinical experiences with the hearing and vestibular system, maxillofacial trauma, facial plastics, head and neck cancer, voice disorders, as well as the more routine problems of otitis media, head and neck infections, chronic sinusitis, and the like. Rotations are all 2 weeks and are divided equally between general and head and neck attendings. Students will need clearance at OSUMC, Hillcrest main, Hillcrest south and Saint John medical center to fully participate in the rotation. Students will be expected to present on a topic of their interest at the end of the 2 week rotation.
