Competency Description
Medical Knowledge
  • Demonstrate knowledge of biomedical, clinical, social, and behavioral sciences.
  • Utilize medical knowledge to differentiate between normal and abnormal findings.
  • Promote disease prevention strategies to improve overall health status.
  • Integrate current evidence-based resources to decision-making in clinical practice.
  • Perform ongoing critical analysis of medical literature and guidelines to stay abreast of current medical standards.
Clinical Reasoning and Problem-Solving Abilities
  • Apply clinical knowledge to patient care by interpreting a history, performing a physical examination, appropriately ordering, and interpreting diagnostic studies, creating a differential diagnosis, formulating an assessment, developing a treatment plan for acute, chronic, and emerging diseases.
  • Relate cultural variances and socioeconomic factors in conjunction with medical knowledge to formulate differential diagnoses, assessment, and treatment plan.
  • Distinguish between extraneous and relevant information when obtaining a patient history.
  • Prioritize differential diagnosis in a hierarchical fashion relative to the patient’s history and clinical findings.
  • Prioritize alarming symptoms and emergent conditions and identify the need for higher level of care including consultation with specialists.
  • Facilitate cost-effective and evidence-based medical care to patients across the lifespan.
  • Develop and implement an individualized plan of care tailored to a patient’s socioeconomic status as well as social, cultural, and religious beliefs.

  • Demonstrate effective verbal and nonverbal communication skills to elicit and provide information with patients, patients’ families, and other members of the healthcare team.

  • Prescribe proper medications considering age, demographics, comorbidities, risk of adverse reactions in addition to patient preferences and financial burden.
  • Complete documents accurately and succinctly in standard medical format in both written and electronic forms.
