Frequently Asked Questions

What type of sample is needed for DNA testing?

In general, we require a medical professional or collection specialist swipe the inside of the mouth to gather DNA (buccal swab). There are other types of DNA collection that may be used in the case of unusual circumstances.

Can testing be done if people live in different cities or states?

Yes. We can set up an appointment for you with a site near your location.

How old does my child have to be to be tested?

There is no age minimum for DNA testing.

Do I need an order from a doctor or attorney to have relatedness testing?

No. Many tests are done for people who want the information for their own knowledge. But if you are seeking custody of a child for whatever reason, you may want to involve an attorney to guide you through the process.

How long does the testing take?

The normal turnaround time is about three days. However, additional testing to ensure accuracy can sometimes take a little longer.

Will it affect the results if I am sick when tested?

No. Medications, diets or illness will not affect the results. However, we will ask if you have had a blood transfusion because this can affect the results.

What if the alleged father, mother or other party to the testing is deceased?

We can reconstruct the genetic makeup of a deceased person if there are certain other family members available for testing. Please call to discuss your particular circumstances.

When and how do I pay for testing?

All fees should be paid at the beginning of testing. Cases received without payment will be held until paid in full. If your DNA is scheduled to be collected at an outside lab, you will need to pay any fees the facility charge for specimen collection separately.

How do I get my results?

As soon as the results are ready, they will be mailed, faxed or presented in person to the designated parties.

Who will receive the results and how will they get them?

All adult participants will receive a notarized copy of the  report will be mailed to them as well. Results will not be released to anyone who is not listed on the consent form.

What if a mother can’t be tested when performing a paternity test?

It is possible to perform paternity testing without the known parent being tested. However, we request that the mother be included in testing if at all possible. If an alleged father’s name is not on the child’s birth certificate, the mother must sign consent in order for the child to be tested.

What do I need to initiate a DNA test for immigration?

See DNA Testing for Immigration Purposes.
