Residency Training Sites and Rotations
The General Surgery Residency Program at OSU Center for Health Sciences is a comprehensive, five-year program designed to produce a well-rounded surgeon ready for active practice upon graduation or advancement to a specialty surgery fellowship.
Our primary teaching hospital is the OSU Medical Center. Residents also rotate at various training sites during their residency including St. Francis Hospital, Hillcrest Medical Center, Cancer Treatment Centers of America – Tulsa, Integris Baptist Hospital – Oklahoma City, St. John Hospital and Bailey Medical Center.
Resident responsibilities include active patient management (both medical and surgical), participation in surgical didactics, performance of research, and involvement in training of third and fourth year medical students and off-service interns.

The country's largest single site osteopathic hospital, OSU Medical Center, is located just blocks from the OSU Center for Health Sciences. OSU Medical Center is a flagship hospital in eastern Oklahoma. Licensed for 426 beds, with premier emergency and outpatient programs, it is poised for great outreach and growth in the 21st century. Staff physicians have trained at some of the nation's most prestigious medical institutions and have a high regard for their personal role in postgraduate education. Internships and residency positions in many different disciplines are available. OSU Medical Center is significantly involved in clinical training for medical students, nurses, therapists and technicians from several area schools and colleges.

Saint Francis Hospital was founded by Mr. and Mrs. William K. Warren, Sr. in 1955 and opened its doors in 1960. The hospital originally consisted of a six-story building with 275 acute-care beds and 40 newborn beds.
Saint Francis Hospital, a 1,112-bed tertiary center, includes the region's only children's hospital and level IV neonatal intensive care unit, a 168-bed heart hospital and Tulsa's leading trauma and emergency center.

INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center has been a part of the southwest Oklahoma City community for over 50 years. South Community Hospital opened its doors in 1965 with three floors, 73 beds and the high-quality health care South Oklahoma City needed. Since then, the South Metro has grown, and so have we. In 1995, we became INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center and today we are home to 334 beds, the metro’s busiest emergency department, seven centers of excellence, and a comprehensive medical center offering a full range of services.

Didactics & Conferences
Structured didactics are a cornerstone of the Oklahoma State University General Surgery program. Required readings, journal findings and research articles are a mainstay of the program.
Medical Student Clerkship
This clerkship is conducted under the supervision of the Chairperson of the Department of Surgery and the Associate Dean for Clinical Education. The Chairperson, or his/her designee, will assign the immediate supervisor(s) for each student or group of students. Student activities will be coordinated to combine didactic and practical instruction to optimize educational opportunities.
The goals for this clerkship are to: (1) introduce the osteopathic medical student to the field of surgery, (2) enable the osteopathic medical student to recognize common surgical disease processes and corresponding treatments, (3) incorporate a multidisciplinary approach to caring for a surgical patient, and (4) prepare the osteopathic student for a holistic approach to patient care, regardless of the specialty said student chooses to pursue.
The curriculum will emphasize the work-up, evaluation, and treatment and disposition of surgical patients. Students will obtain this knowledge through the completion of selected readings, online lectures, presentations, and exams. Students will incorporate this knowledge through their experiences in the clinic, hospital and operating room.
