Mental Health Awareness Education

Mental Health Awareness Training (MHAT)

The Department was awarded a three-year SAMHSA grant in 2018 for mental health training. The grant was renewed for another five years (through September 2026). MHAT is focused on expanding and enhancing awareness training efforts to better prepare individuals, including first responders, to identify mental illness, employ de-escalation techniques, establish referral linkages, and connect individuals to available community resources. MHAT includes CLEET accredited trainings for law enforcement.

Through the grant, Dr. Jason Beaman and Project Coordinator, Kayleigh Faber, can provide Mental Health First Aid Certification, which includes topics on depression and mood disorders; anxiety disorders; trauma; psychosis; and substance use disorders. The grant also allows additional mental health awareness training.
