Training and Education

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at the OSU Center for Health Sciences is structured to prepare the resident for hospital-based practice or to proceed to fellowship training. The three-year program features well-structured academics and board clinical training with an average daily inpatient census in excess of 200. Ample opportunity exists for critical care experience, invasive procedures and clinical research.

Including Internal Medicine, there are 12 residencies housed at OSU Medical Center including general surgery, radiology, emergency medicine and ear, nose and throat and more. Our residents also rotate through the Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center in Muskogee.

Doctors of internal medicine treat the whole person, not just internal organs. They care for their patients for life, from late teen years through old age. Our Internal medicine physicians are specialists who apply scientific knowledge and clinical expertise to the diagnosis, treatment and compassionate care of adults. An internist can treat for something as routine as the flu or fatigue or provide in-depth care for diseases such as diabetes, lung or heart disease. Internists often coordinate with the many subspecialists the adult patient might see in the process of treating illness

Wards

The core Internal Medicine teaching services are centered at OSU Medical Center, with an additional service line at the Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center.

Residents split time between two inpatient general medicine teams at OSU Medical Center, in addition to a 32 bed ICU service.  Medicine teams typically include two upper level residents, one to two interns and three to four medical students.

We also have a tremendous clinical pharmacy program as well as dedicated dietitians who round with us both in the general wards as well as the ICU.

Non-assigned admissions are split throughout the day between three Internal Medicine teams and the Family Medicine service. A dedicated night float rotation handles overnight admissions to the general medical floor.

Residents maintain both an internal medicine and HIV continuity clinic, housed across from OSU Medical Center in the Internal Medicine clinic offices. Depending on the rotation, residents will spend half to one day per week in their clinic.

Ancillary staff perform lab draws, EKG's and place peripheral IV's 24 hours per day.  While we pride ourselves in our ability to perform procedures we do have a robust and exceptional Interventional Radiology department, who will also assist with lines and procedures when necessary.

Didactics & Conferences

Structured didactics are a cornerstone of the Oklahoma State University Internal Medicine program.

Morning Report

Morning report occurs on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 0715-0800. These conferences include a combination of attending and resident led topics ranging from journal reviews to clinical practice pearls to oral boards.

Grand rounds occur on most Tuesday mornings, include both national and in-house presenters, and rotate through topics centered on practice development, morbidity/mortality and clinical updates.

Book Club

Wednesday mornings are set aside for book club, where the residents and attendings cover material presented in both Harrison's as well as carefully curated guideline and review articles.

Board Review

Two months of the year, morning report is set aside as board review, where we cover either the medstudy or mksap video series for internal medicine. Board review question banks are also provided for the residents each academic year at no charge.

Medical Student Clerkship

The Internal Medicine Clerkship is a four-week block that takes place in the OSU Medical Center

This setting provides a unique opportunity for direct patient care providing on-site consultation services. In addition to learning from supervised patient care experiences, a variety of additional learning experiences will be incorporated.
